Can Skillful Lottery Players Have an Advantage?

In all games of chance there are millions of people that are drawn to that game. And, all of them are looking for ways to improve their chances of winning. Whether it is Texas Holdem, Blackjack, Horse Racing or the Lottery, their aficionados flock to the game they love to play. They are all looking for that winning edge.
For each game, the players can be divided into groups; the vacationer (one time per year), the beginner or novice, the recreational player (once in a while), the student (reads books and studies the game) and the serious player (plays on a regular basis). The serious players know the ins and outs and understand the nuances of their game. This sets them apart from the average player. And, the number one thing that is true for all of the serious players, regardless of the game, is they know how to play the odds. They not only know how, but have the self discipline necessary to consistently use those odds to their advantage.
Let me give you a glimpse into their world. Now, this may sound strange, but I’m going to start by talking about something that you have all seen on TV many times. I’m going to talk about hurricane forecasting. You might think that hurricane forecasting and gambling are strange bedfellows, but actually they have a lot in common. So, how did I manage to link the two? Easy; the Cone of Uncertainty.
You’ve all seen the hurricane track models that show the most probable path (right down the middle). The Cone of Uncertainty spreads out from there showing the less likely paths that the hurricane might follow. And, in spite of all of our computing power, the Cone of Uncertainty is the best that weather forecasters can do; they’re playing the odds.
Now, on the Weather Channel and the various news programs, you’ve seen the models depicting the most probable landfall locations and the storm tracks that are less likely. Let’s try a little experiment. Instead of looking straight down from space at these models, let’s look at them horizontally, Pretend you’re on a ship looking toward shore and, then, draw a graph that shows the most and least likely land fall locations. It would look something like this.

To anyone who has taken a course in statistics or probability, you will recognize this as the infamous Bell-Shaped Curve. The most likely outcome is the one right down the middle (50) and the least likely outcomes are those located on the fringe to either the right (0-10)or to the left (90-100). In fact, if you move farther to the right or to the left, all of the weather forecasters models assure us that the hurricane will definitely not make landfall there(0 or 100).
So, if someone offered you a bet that the storm would make landfall between points 30 and 70, you wouldn’t take that bet, because there is a very high probability that the hurricane will do exactly that. But, if someone offered you a bet that the storm would hit between 0 and 30 or 70 to 100, you would immediately check your pockets to see how much money you had on you. Why? Because, that would be a very good bet. The odds would be in your favor.
Weather predictions and playing the lottery are very similar activities. Back in the day, everybody used to laugh and joke about the weatherman’s forecasting prowess, but today, with the help of computers, everyone is glued to the TV for the next report. A striking parallel exists for lottery players. Serious lottery players couldn’t do what they do today without the modern computer and some serious lottery software.
Serious lottery players use their lottery software in the same way the weather forecasters do. For every lottery, a player can create numerous bell shaped curves describing various aspects of the lottery’s performance. Using such curves, the player makes lottery predictions that improve their chances of winning the lottery jackpot by not wasting their money on low probability events. This is not some closely guarded lottery secret nor is there anything magical or mystical about it.
For the serious lottery player, making lottery predictions is similar to making weather predictions. Here is how it’s done. Based upon the lottery’s historical record, the player creates an abbreviated play list that they believe represents the most probable outcome. For example, the player might create a 30 number play list for a 6 out of 49 lottery.
The trick is to create a play list that has all six winning numbers in it. This is done by simply making logical choices based upon the historical record. The lottery strategy, in its simplest form, is this. The player concentrates his lottery budget on highly probable events to improve their chances of winning the lottery jackpot.
