Chronicles of an Online Poker Player – Part Twelve
“Is Today Rocks or Diamonds?”
Author: J. Scott Miller
Okay, so you are at work and all you can think about is when you get off you are going straight home to play poker on Intertops New Poker Room, right? I do this all of the time, but what I sometimes forget is that it may be a day of finding Rocks in my cards, not Diamonds. Be prepared for the rocks, my friends, because if you are not, it could (and will) cost you that hard earned money you made while at work thinking about playing online poker.
What I am basically getting at is preparing to play online is something most people don’t think about doing. They just turn on their computer, log onto Intertopspoker.com (if you want to play the best) and just click away. You are, for lack of a better term, going into battle with the other players. Bluffing occasionally works, but when you are continually getting those BAD sets of cards I like to call “rocks”, it is easy to finally give in and play that jack/three suited. Yes, I am guilty of this, even when you are on the small blind, it is a bad idea.
It is just as bad as chasing cards that are probably giving you a 5% shot at catching a flush on the river.
If you were going to win everyday, you would be either retired or playing poker for a living on TV and around the world.
Since you are neither of those, continue reading this article.
Just to make a point of this, I played sloppy today on several occasions, playing Q-6 of Clubs, hoping to catch anything remotely playable. Just so you know I am not in the business of losing money.
This was just an experiment on my behalf. I began today with $30 and played in a $25/50 room. Generally speaking, this is a very bad idea to start with such a short stack at this price of a table. I see people do it all of the time and their money is gone in a flash. This is when the “sharks” smell blood in the water.
Like I stated in “Article 11,” Intertops New Poker Room allows you to simply click on the “Stats” tab below to track your own play. Basically, it can tell you anything from how many hands you won/lost on the “showdown” or just what the average hands are and how many are played in an hour.
Unfortunately for me, my experiment was going as planned. I was losing money. I wasn’t playing garbage hands, just sub-par hands like Jack-Six Hearts.
But when I had almost had enough, and was down to my last $6.40, I made my comeback. It was raining “Diamonds” like crazy, and several “all-ins” later I was back in action, and had won an astonishing $104.50! I just knew in this one particular hand my three 9’s was tops over my opponent’s two aces.
So in the end; playing average (or sub-par) starting cards is a bad thing, we all already knew that. But when these cards continually come, learn to fold right away.
Don’t be tempted to play suited cards unless they are connected, or closely connected (This also depends on what kind of money is being thrown around the table).
As a bonus, I also earned one GOLD CARD and two GOLD CHIPS while playing. These incentives for Intertops Poker players are great. They allow you to enter tournaments with regularity using these chips, and the race to collect as many Gold Cards is fun, and could win you a ton of cash!
- I’ll see you at the tables at Intertopspoker.com!
